World Domination, Anyone?

I've just been thinking recently about world domination and how hard/easy it would be to achieve. It's been done in the past a lot, and even now there are people at the top pulling the strings (though I guess they're not being very open about it). I guess you can argue it was easier to do in the past. Were people more naive then? Less cautious and more caring and easily lead? It seems like it was easier to influence people back in the day than it is now, but at the same time, people are just the same. In the past, you had less access to everything that wasn't nearby. You were lead but only by things that had access to you. Now, people are just as easily lead except they have much more information - they have a greater choice when deciding on what to be lead by.

Back to my question; World Domination - how hard is it to achieve?
Let's say you started off with the regions that don't yet have access to everything, or places that have better things to worry about. Let's you started off with the third world countries. If you have a somewhat agreeable view about things and convince them it will benefit them, you might gather a crowd, but what would you do after that?

With the world's power not being equally distributed amongst the countries, it'll be hard to dominate the world unless you can somehow control the people at the top, or somehow convince them NOT to nuke you. Of course, if you can gather enough countries to follow your lead, the people at the top will want to partnership with you. Again, they won't follow you but will insist on being the leader alongside you. I don't like sharing.

SO. Anyone have any plans on how I can come to rule the world before I'm too old? |:
